ANONYMOUS TIP LEADS TO 11 FELONY ARRESTS

An anonymous caller informed the Saline County Sheriff’s Office of an active cock-fighting event which was allegedly taking place behind an address on Lee Lane in Mabelvale, Arkansas.

Prior to patrol deputies conducting their investigation, members of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) were notified, as well as Deputy Jack Campbell of the Environmental Unit.

Several patrol units and CID unmarked vehicles proceeded to the 9100 block of Lee Lane.  Deputies observed an unusual amount of vehicles parked in the area and heard the sounds of chickens crowing in the woods behind that address.

When deputies entered the woods, they observed approximately 30-35 individuals standing near, what appeared to be, a cock-fighting pit.  Several of the individuals fled on foot.  There were men, women and children attending this event.

A total of 11 individuals were arrested for Unlawful Animal Fighting, a Class D felony.  Several were arrested for Felony Fleeing and one was charged with Possession of a Firearm.

Recovered from the scene were: 1) several live chickens; 2) a loaded handgun; 3) cock-fighting paraphernalia, i.e. razor spurs; 4) ledger books; 5) a scale; 6) records/documents; 6) hypodermic syringe containing unknown liquid and; 7) approximately $2,500 in U.S. currency.

The live chickens were transported to the Benton Animal Control.  As of this press release, those chickens appear to be good health and may be adopted at a later time.

The following individuals were arrested:

·         Leovardo Huerta

·         Jorge Juarez

·         Domacio Fernandez

·         Maria Hernandez

·         Francisco Arevale

·         Martin Torres

·         Orlando Melgarjo

·         Thien Nguyen

·         Hieu Duong

·         Frank Nichols

·         Douglas Robertson

The individuals have not yet had a bond review.  All are being housed at the Saline County Detention Center.

This investigation is continuing.  The Saline County Sheriff’s Office asks that if any citizens have information to this, or any other similar crimes, to contact Deputy Jack Campbell at 501-303-1546
